Link Building Should Start With Why the Link Deserves to Exist

Buying links by DR, quantity or publication speed is easy.

Determining whether a link is relevant, credible and appropriate for the market is harder.

That is the part I care about.

How I evaluate opportunities

  • Topical relevance.
  • Actual publication quality.
  • Audience.
  • Editorial context.
  • Traffic.
  • Destination page.
  • Anchor text.
  • Outbound linking behavior.
  • Commercial arrangement.
  • Country and language.
  • Risk.

International links

An English-language link is not automatically relevant to the United States, the United Kingdom or another English-speaking market.

Authority needs to be evaluated in the context of the market being targeted.

Beyond purchased placements

Authority can also come from research, expert commentary, partnerships, link reclamation, unlinked mentions, directories that matter and digital PR.
